American Horror Story season 13 arrives more than two years after the anthology’s previous chapter ended in April 2024, and Ryan Murphy has decided subtlety can wait. The new installment brings back major stars, resurrects fan-favorite characters and assembles what Evan Peters calls a “greatest-hits season.”
Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Peters headline a cast filled with familiar faces from across the FX franchise. The premiere is set for Thursday, Sept. 24, at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu.
Murphy, who co-created the series, has compared the crossover to the “Avengers of American Horror Story.” He is also returning to the director’s chair for the first time on the flagship series since Freak Show. Clearly, season 13 is not planning a quiet entrance.
What is the new season about?
FX has kept the central story under wraps. Its broad synopsis promises an all-star ensemble, with several performers reprising popular roles, as the anthology builds on a franchise that has generated more than 700 million streaming hours worldwide.
The first substantial clue arrived April 6, when Murphy’s production company shared photos from Jessica Lange’s first day back on set. Wearing a blue dress, black heels and a retro beehive, Lange immediately sparked comparisons to Constance Langdon, her formidable Murder House character.
That instinct was correct. Lange will reprise Constance and her other previous roles from the series. She has appeared in five seasons and last returned as Constance in season eight, Apocalypse.
Early fan theories pointed toward another collision involving Coven and Apocalypse. When one Instagram user asked for more witches, specifically Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau, Murphy’s team gave a very efficient reply: “Done.”
Murphy has rejected the idea that the season is simply a Coven revival. “I didn’t want to just do a Coven reboot,” he told Vogue in August 2026. “Everybody thinks that’s what it is; it’s not. I was very interested in the greatest villains we’ve done.”
What does the trailer reveal?
The official trailer arrived in September 2026 and confirmed the subtitle: 13. It also turned the franchise archive into a very crowded supernatural reunion.
Jessica Lange appears as Fiona Goode from Coven and Elsa Mars from Freak Show. Evan Peters returns as Cult leader Kai Anderson and Hotel killer James Patrick March, while Sarah Paulson is seen as Supreme witch Cordelia Goode. Emma Roberts reprises Madison Montgomery, and John Carroll Lynch once again applies the deeply unsettling smile of Twisty the Clown.
The footage strongly suggests that the Coven characters will sit near the center of the action. Cordelia senses a looming disaster, while March announces that it is “witch-hunting season.” That is not the sort of forecast anyone wants from the owner of the Hotel Cortez.
Murphy offered one more cryptic hint about the threat. Previous seasons have pitted characters against the Antichrist, but this time he suggested aiming even higher: “Let’s go above his pay grade for this.” He declined to explain further, leaving the identity of the season’s larger menace carefully sealed.
Which returning stars are in the cast?
The cast list reads like an alumni event with a much higher risk of bloodshed. Returning veterans include:
- Jessica Lange
- Sarah Paulson
- Evan Peters
- Angela Bassett
- Kathy Bates
- Emma Roberts
- Billie Lourd
- Gabourey Sidibe
- Leslie Grossman
Several actors will play more than one character. Paulson has the heaviest assignment, taking on six roles. Lange will portray all four of her established characters, while Peters is set to play five. Billie Lourd returns as both Mallory from Apocalypse and Winter Anderson from Cult.
Among Peters’ characters are Tate Langdon, James Patrick March and Kai Anderson. Murphy said one scene required the actor to play Tate, also appearing as Rubber Man, opposite Kai. Peters effectively had to perform a conversation with himself.
Murphy expected the sequence to be difficult, but said Peters completed it in only two takes. Years of surviving fictional cults, ghosts and serial killers apparently provide excellent technical training.
Bassett had already expressed enthusiasm about returning at the LACMA Art + Film Gala in November 2025. She said she had always “hoped” to come back, though at the time she teased that the identity of her character remained a mystery.
Why did Evan Peters and Jessica Lange return?
In January 2026, Evan Peters explained that working with Ryan Murphy again was part of the appeal. The pair previously collaborated on Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, but the larger reunion sealed the deal.
“It’s sort of an alumni, and we’re all getting back together to do this greatest-hits season,” Peters told The Hollywood Reporter. He added that the chance to work again with Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett made him eager to see how Murphy would combine the characters.
Lange’s involvement surprised him. Less than a year earlier, the Oscar-winning actor had laughed off the prospect of another return, saying she had not worked on the show regularly for more than a decade and was not interested.
Murphy changed that answer. According to the producer, Lange responded to his invitation with: “Sign me up. I’d love to do it.”
Her comeback carries extra weight because she defined the anthology’s early years through Constance Langdon, Sister Jude Martin, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars. Season 13 will bring all four into the same sprawling event, giving Lange a particularly glamorous scheduling challenge.
Who are the new and expanded cast additions?
Cult filmmaker John Waters announced his involvement during a Valentine’s Day spoken-word performance in Baltimore in February 2026. He could not disclose the role, but confirmed it was substantial.
“I can’t say what role, but I have a big new part in American Horror Story,” Waters said. He joked that he tends to be cast as “either the devil or Chucky’s father” and has long wanted to steal Vincent Price’s career. With this series, either description could qualify as a normal workday.
The trailer revealed several other additions and returning characters:
- Riverdale star Madelaine Petsch joins the ensemble.
- Orlando Jones plays Papa Legba.
- Paul Anthony Kelly appears as a mysterious blond character.
- Mena Suvari returns as Murder House character Elizabeth Short, better known as the Black Dahlia.
- Joey Pollari plays Ben DeSoto, whom Murphy describes as the season’s “anchor.”
Kelly previously worked with Murphy on Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. Details about Petsch’s role and Waters’ mysterious character remain undisclosed.
Why did Ariana Grande leave the show?
Ariana Grande was originally announced for the cast but exited in July 2026 because production conflicted with her Eternal Sunshine Tour. The singer and actor also chose to step away from public life after the tour ended in September.
Murphy said there was no personal tension behind the departure. He explained that Grande had warned him early that touring might make the schedule impossible, particularly after completing the Wicked films.
When the planned episode approached, Grande told him she did not know how she could balance the production with her concert dates. Murphy offered to move the idea to another season, and she agreed.
“I love Ariana Grande,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re great friends.”
Her character has not necessarily vanished forever, then. The concept may be saved for a later chapter, provided her calendar and Murphy’s supernatural machinery eventually cooperate.
When and where can viewers watch?
The 13th season premieres Sept. 24, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu. The date falls on a Thursday, giving viewers a full weekend to process whichever witches, killers, ghosts and higher cosmic powers survive the opening episode.
Earlier seasons of American Horror Story are currently available to stream on Hulu, including the installments supplying many of the returning characters. Anyone planning a full refresher has plenty to cover, from Murder House and Coven to Hotel, Freak Show, Cult and Apocalypse.
