The Simpsons Season 38 will open with Emma Thompson playing Constance Clavinger, a reclusive, hard-drinking children’s author who may be Springfield Elementary’s best hope of rescuing its book fair. That is certainly unusual casting, although calling Thompson the show’s most bizarre guest star is a stretch for a series that has welcomed everyone from Stephen Hawking to Tony Blair.

Fox will premiere “The Children’s Book Job” on September 27, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET. The installment is the 810th episode of the animated institution, because apparently Springfield’s residents have discovered the true secret of eternal youth: never changing clothes.

What happens in the Season 38 premiere?

The story sends Homer Simpson to the airport to collect Clavinger, whose help Marge needs to save Springfield Elementary’s book fair. Thompson voices the eccentric author, while Saturday Night Live Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost appears as himself.

Fox listings and reporting from TV Insider both support those casting details. Neither Thompson nor Jost has publicly commented on the episode, and the premiere has not yet aired, so there are no reviews or audience reactions to measure.

The “most bizarre” label also remains a matter of taste rather than fact. Thompson’s character sounds delightfully messy, but she is still entering a guest-star archive filled with aliens, presidents, rock legends, billionaires and celebrities playing highly exaggerated versions of themselves. Springfield has never operated a strict normality policy.

Which stars are joining the new episodes?

Thompson and Jost are only the first names on a busy Season 38 guest list. TV Insider reports that upcoming episodes will also feature conductor Gustavo Dudamel and actors Rachel Bloom, Jenna Ortega, Paul Dano, Henry Winkler and Jennifer Aniston.

The season will experiment visually as well as vocally. Planned highlights include a crossover couch gag with Solar Opposites and a stop-motion sequence created by the team behind Robot Chicken. After nearly four decades, the opening sofa remains one of television’s hardest-working pieces of furniture.

Michael Stipe, who previously appeared on the series and returned in 2026, described the invitation as “super flattering.” The former R.E.M. frontman also praised the show’s “grand message of great hope,” offering a warmer assessment than Springfield usually gives its own residents.

Why is the Fox season shorter this time?

Season 38 contains 15 episodes for Fox, a noticeably smaller order than the traditional broadcast runs associated with the series. Showrunner Matt Selman told TV Insider that the network plans to show those installments sequentially across fall and winter, with the season continuing into spring 2027.

The reduced Fox order does not mean the Simpsons family is packing its famous couch into storage. Disney+ exclusives are supplementing the broadcast schedule, reflecting the show’s changing distribution model. One recent special, “Yellow Mirror,” featured Demi Moore as an artificial creation called Fake Marge, a role that presents strong competition in any contest for strangest Springfield visitor.

Fox renewed the series through Season 40 in April 2025, giving Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie plenty of runway beyond the new batch. The shorter broadcast season therefore looks less like a farewell and more like a reshuffle, with traditional episodes, streaming specials and experimental animation sharing the workload.

For now, Thompson’s Constance Clavinger has the premiere spotlight. Whether she becomes Springfield’s latest literary savior or another spectacular complication will be revealed when Homer completes what may be his most dangerous assignment yet: collecting someone from the airport on time.
